The Stoneman Murders Movie Review

Posted by bollywoodcinemagallery on February 22, 2009

Manish Gupta has touched upon a very interesting subject and perhaps something very tricky for the Mumbai Police force. He dwells on the murders, which took place in Bombay in the early 1980s between Sion and Matunga. At the site of every murder, there was a huge stone found by the investigating officers. After nine such murders the killings stopped. A few years later, similar killings were reported in Calcutta. While the police files have termed these murders as ‘unsolved’, the director has nailed the culprit. Is this cinematic liberty or plain fact? Also, the reasons for the Calcutta murders have been touched upon giving ample evidence of the truth. So will the files now be reopened? Just a thought!

To Manish’s credit, he sets up chilling scenes to replicate the time and moment. There is an air of dread in the night when the killer stalks the streets of Bombay and suspended police officer Sanjay Shelar (Kay Kay Menon) is given the go-ahead to conduct a parallel investigation by his superior. Shelar has been suspended because of custodial death, and thinks he knows something and he even forewarns his superior about more such killing.
As the film progresses his colleagues in the force suspect him of being the killer as on a few occasions he has been found near the site of the killings and on one occasion he is seen helping a victim and given chase.

In hiding now, Shelar informs his superiors that there will be another killing (the ninth) and they will then stop. He has read up on some ancient voodoo rituals and is convinced that this is the work of some ill-informed person misguided by a tantric to cure his impotency.

Billu ( Billu Barber ) Movie Review

Posted by bollywoodcinemagallery on February 22, 2009

Billu Barber starring Irfan Khan and Lara Dutta in the lead also has Shahrukh Khan playing a superstar, a role pretty close to his real-life self. Directed by Priyadarshan, Billu Barber is a simple story about Billu (Irrfan Khan) a barber, his wife Bindiya (Lara Dutta) and his two kids. Billu’s life is just like any ordinary man, but it turns upside down when superstar Sahir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) enters his village to shoot for a film. Back in school days, much before Sahir Khan climbed the ladder of success in the Hindi Film Industry, the now barber and the superstar were childhood friends. The news that Billu is Sahir’s childhood friend spreads like wildfire and suddenly, the barber is now the talk-of-the-village. But does Sahir remember his friend after all the wealth, fame and success that he has achieved since? Watch the movie to find out as Billu Barber is indeed worth a trip to a nearby theatre. Popular Priyadarshan films this decade have all mostly been comedies with a tad bit of emotions in the second half. But Billu Barber is different; it’s a realistic take on what could happen when a life of an ordinary barber clashes with that of a hugely popular superstar. Its also about how ordinary people are passionate about their cinematic heroes, who in some way is a part of their lives. The pace of the pre interval portions is slightly slow, but the film picks up in the second half. But its the last 30 mins of Billu Barber that makes the most impact! The speech delivered by Sahir Khan on stage, is filled with morals on why one should never forget their roots regardless of the heights of success or wealth achieved. The narration is very entertaining, the 3 songs of SRK with Deepika Padukone, Priyanka Chopra and Kareena Kapoor are visually brilliant and placed perfectly. The music is good. Love Mera Hit Hit and Mar Jaani are the pick of the lot. Billu Bhayankar is funny and stays with you long after the credits roll. Bilu Barber belongs to Irrfan Khan. The highly talented actor is splendid as Billu displaying a huge array of expressions and emotions on screen. Lara Dutta compliments Irrfan pretty well, it has to be her best role to date. Character actors like Om Puri, Ansari, Rajpal Yadav and the others, entertain. Coming to Shahrukh Khan, he is convincing in the role of Sahir Khan. Playing a character that is very close to his real life self, Khan is surprisingly restrained and delivers an extremely warm performance. This is undoubtedly his best short role in any film so far! Overall, Billu Barber isn’t an out-n-out comedy but a well directed Priyadarshan film on relationships and emotions. It has something in it for everyone and in particular a must watch for children. The film is not expected to shatter box-office records, but should open well thanks to SRK’s presence and not to forget the well-promoted songs featuring the hottest female stars in the industry. A lot should depend on the audience verdict too, strong word of mouth should ensure yet another success for SRK and Red Chillies Entertainment!

My Name Is Khan to be produced by both SRK and Karan Johar

Posted by bollywoodcinemagallery on February 22, 2009

My Name Is Khan to be produced by both SRK and Karan Johar Posted by admin in Bollywood Reviews & News, Uncategorized on 02 22nd, 2009 | no responses My Name Is Khan directed by Karan Johar will now be co-produced by both Shahrukh Khan’s Red Chillies Entertainment and Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions. The reason for the decision to jointly produce the film is the budget of My Name Is Khan, which is expected to be huge. The other reason could be SRK’s high market value and his remuneration for the film would increase the budget substancially. But now with SRK being the co-producer the profit’s (or losses, if any) would be shared. Previously, the two celebrities known for the warm friendship they share, produced Kaal (Ajay Devgan, Vivek Oberoi film) which disappointed at the box-office. With My Name Is Khan, Karan has managed to sign the hit jodi of SRK and Kajol together, for the first time since Karan’s very own K3G.

Tata Sky is set to air Oscar favourite “Slumdog Millionaire” and claims it has the required permission to show the English version that has got an A-certificate.

“It’s only after the permission and the necessary paperwork that the English version of the film is being made available to the DTH (Direct-To-Home) audience. We will also give a statutory warning before the film to warn audiences about the content. The service also offers a child lock facility,” Vikram Mehra, chief marketing officer, Tata Sky, told IANS.

When asked who gave the firm permission to air the film, he refused to name the body.

Based on Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup’s novel “Q & A”, “Slumdog Millionaire” tells the story of a slum boy who wins a quiz show.

The film was made in English and latter dubbed in Hindi for the Indian audiences. While the English version has an A certificate, the Hindi one has been given an U/A certificate.

A source from the Central Board of Film Certification said that the language in the English version is abusive in some parts, the reason for its adult certification. But that aspect is toned down in the Hindi version, that’s why it has got an U/A certificate in India, the source added.

Both the versions of the film will be available on the DTH service from Feb 20 onwards.

‘Slumdog’ is an outstanding film that has been acclaimed by critics and viewers from across the globe. The premiere of this mega blockbuster on our platform will offer all subscribers the complete movie experience that they can watch and enjoy multiple times with their loved ones, said Mehra.

Delhi 6 Movie Review

Posted by bollywoodcinemagallery on February 22, 2009

Banner : UTV Motion Pictures & Rakesh Omprakash Mehra Pictures
Genre : Drama

Music : AR Rehman
Lyrics : Prasoon Joshi, Vivinenne Pocha, Claire
Dialogues : Prasoon Joshi

Aaction : Allan Amin
Editor : P S Bharathi
Screenplay : Rakesh Mehra, Prasoon Joshi, Kamlesh Pandey
Direction : Rakesh Omprakash Mehra
Producers : Rakesh Omprakash Mehra & Ronnie Screwvala

Roshan (Abhishek Bachchan) – an NRI from the USA – visits India to accompany his ailing granny (Waheeda Rehman) to fulfill her wish to live her last leg of life in Delhi 6, the neighborhood she grew up. Being a guy brought up in the USA, Roshan finds the locality of Delhi 6 intimidating at first. Slowly he draws himself into various people around him. Bittu (Sonam Kapoor) is his neighbor girl and Roshan helps her to fend off the marriage proposals so that she could concentrate on her dream of becoming an Indian Idol. Meanwhile, there are rumors about a black monkey creating havoc in city. The rest of the story is all about what the black monkey is all about and what happens to the relationship between Roshan and Bittu. Abhishek Bachchan is adequate as the male lead. Sonam Kapoor is pretty good. Rishi Kapoor is excellent. Atul Kulakarni steals the show as an innocent man. It’s a different role for Divya Dutta and she is good. Vijay Raaz goes overboard at times. Om Puri and Pawan Malhotra are superb. It’s a cake walk for Waheeda Rehman. Aditi Rao is supremely good in a sympathy-oriented role. Amitab Bachchan did a cameo

The basic idea of this film is to show there that is God as well as devil in every one of us and we should kill the devil (black monkey) inside us in order to have a good conscience. This message is delivered in the climax and if you rewind the entire story and the happenings in the film, you would realize that black monkey concept and Ram Leela episodes are metaphorically inserted in the screenplay. Direction of the film is good in parts. But the real problem with the film is unfocussed narration by having too many characters in the film and dwelling on each and every character for more time. Another problem with this film is that director tried to discuss and resolve too many issues (Hindu-Muslim divide, media’s over-enthusiasm about making news out of nothing, untouchability (caste divide), brothers’ conflict, superstition, politicians exploiting the religion, child marriages, NRI realizing good things about India, Ram Leela play etc) at the same time. One fails to understand how Abhishek keeps jumping like a monkey from building to building during interval part. Is it to hint the audiences that he could be the black monkey of the film? Music by AR Rehman is the highlight of the film. All songs are excellently picturized. Dilgira song is the only song with vibrant colors in this film as rest of the film has tint to the color. The way all characters of Delhi 6 appear in the dreamy song of Abhishek shot in colorful USA streets is refreshing. Cinematography is very good. Art direction is excellent as the ambiance of old Delhi and Chandni Chowk come alive in this film. Rerecording of the film is also good. Like Rang De Basanthi, this film too is shot using spot dubbing.
You have to concentrate listening to dialogues as they sound shallow and inaudible in theaters with not-so-good sound systems. Vaibhavi Merchant’s choreography is first rate. Editing is adequate. Production values are grand. First half of the film is alright. Second half is boring. Interval point of the film is abrupt. The major strength of the film is music by AR Rehman. It’s extraordinary. The main drawbacks of the film are innumerable characterizations, too many metaphors and lack of focus on narrating the main point as multiple subplots dilute the interest. Looks like naming Films on Delhi (Chandni Chowk to China and Delhi 6) is a box-office jinx for this year. On a whole, Delhi 6 lacks soul and is a preachy and boring film.
